Narrative

The Bonnet-t-e's & Kin, Vol. 18, pp. 1-7, 1994. Howard T. Bonnett, letter 24 November 1995. Peter Bonnett, together with brothers Jacob and Lewis, served as Indian spies on the western frontier. All applied for pensions for service during the Revolutionary War, but brother Samuel testified that they were to young to have served and hence the pensions were revoked. Hardy County was formed in 1785 from Harrison County which at this time was part of Frederick County, Virginia. File BAKQ7EA on GenServ, May 1997. Born Cedar Creek Swamp, Frederick County, Virginia. 1810 Virginia census, Harrison County, p. 101: Peter Bonnett, age 26- 45; wife of age 16-26. Two female children of age 0-10. Brother Samuel is also found in this census. 1820 Virginia census, Lewis County, p. 145A: Peter Bonnet, age >45, with wife of age 26-45. Three male children of ages 0-10, 0-10, and 0-10. Four female children of ages 0-10, 0-10, 0-10, and 0-10. 1830 Virginia census, Lewis County, p. 231: Peter Bonnett (not listed in census index) age 60-70, with wife age 40-50; four male children of ages 5-10, 5-10, 10-15, and 15-20; and six female children of ages 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, and 20-30. Peter Bonnett, his brother Lewis, and their families left for Iowa in 1835. They were delayed in southern Illinois where Peter died and a child was born. By 1836 Lewis and some of the children of Peter were in Iowa, where they settled in Jefferson County or just across the Van Buren County line. Brother Phillip Bonnett also came out at this time. V.D. Peter Bonnett, S5293, Virginia Line, applied 5 February 1833 from Lewis City, Virginia, at the age of 69. He was born Hardy County in 1764. He served from March 1779 to 1783 and a pension certificate was issued 19 July 1833, but he was later dropped from the pension roll as were his brothers Jacob and Lewis, apparently on the evidence of his brother Samuel and others.
