Narrative

The Bonnet-t-e's & Kin, Vol. 18, pp. 1-7, 1994. Howard T. Bonnett, letter 24 November 1995. Lewis Bonnett, together with brothers Jacob and Peter, served as Indian spies on the western frontier. All applied for pensions for service during the Revolutionary War, but brother Samuel testified that they were to young to have served and hence the pensions were revoked. Harrison County was part of Frederick County, Virginia, at this time. File BAKQ7EA on GenServ, May 1997. Born Cedar Creek Swamp, Frederick County, Virginia. Lewis Bonnett, his brother Peter, and their families left for Iowa in 1835. They were delayed in southern Illinois where Peter died and a child was born. By 1836 they were in Iowa, where they settled in Jefferson County or just across the Van Buren County line. Phillip Bonnett also came out at this time. V.D. White 1990, Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, p. 320. Also R.B. Johnson 1959, West Virginians in the American Revolution. Lewis Bonnett, S5294, Virginia Line. He applied for a pension 5 February 1833 [or 5 July 1833, WVAR] from Lewis City, Virginia, at the age of 71. He stated he had lived in Lewis City since 1816. He was born in what later was Hardy County in 1761/2 [WVAR]. He was drafted in Harris County, Virginia [GARWPF] or enlisted March 1779/80, serving as an Indian spy until 1783. His twin brother was Jacob, aged 75. A brother Samuel was aged 71 in 1834. There was also a brother Peter 18 months old than Samuel , as well as a brother John killed April 1783 in a skirmish with Indians and buried in a cave in Lewis City, Virginia. His person certificate was suspended in 1833 as he had not been in the regular service. 1820 Virginia census, Lewis County, p. 145A: Lewis Bonnet, age >45, with wif of age 26-45. Two male children of ages 0-10 and 10-16. Six female children of ages 0-10, 0-10, 0-10, 10-16, 10-16, and 10- 16. Two other persons in household. 1830 Virginia census, Lewis County, p. 230. Pension suspended as were those of brothers Peter and Jacob. J. Comstock 1976, The West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia Supplement Series, vol. 12-13, p. 505. There was significant fraud in the early pensions. J. Wamsley was actively engaged in writing fraudulent declarations, receiving the first money drawn. He wrote the declarations of Jacob, Lewis, and Peter Bonnett, none of whom could read or write. Wamsley offered to write a fraudulent declaration for Samuel Bonnett who turned him down. J.
